Stolpersteine app wins Joe Cattini Local Hero Award

Fontys Information and Communication Technology

Thursday September 21st 2024, Smart Mobile students from Fontys ICT won the ‘Joe Cattini Local Hero Award’ for creating the Stolpersteine app. This award was presented during the Local Hero Concert, organised by the 18 September Foundation, which was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Eindhoven.

The Stolpersteine, also known as trip-stones, are memorials to the victims of the Holocaust. The app contains the stories behind 15,500 Stolpersteine in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and France. Information about the memorial stones and the World War II victims for whom they were laid is collected in a database. Through a map, users can read about birthdays, family members, deportation and survivors. This app helps keep the memory of World War II victims alive.

The cooperation between the 18 September Foundation and Fontys ICT once again shows that Fontys ICT is a breeding ground for innovation and technology and underlines our mission to contribute to society. We would like to congratulate Zhanton Bastiaanssen, Mihail Bogdanov, Arjan Elissen, Jakub Jelínek, Vladyslav Ovod, Kyllian Warmerdam and Marcel Veldhuijzen and colleagues with this wonderful award!
